Zodiac signs, also referred to as horoscope or star signs, are some of the most easily recognizable symbols throughout cultures and societies across the globe. In fact, there are even constellations named after the twelve signs as well. Depending on the month you were born you are placed under a certain sign which is said to play a role in your character traits, physical attributes, personality, success in life and love and more.

You may also be familiar with daily horoscopes referring to each of the signs with various outcomes for each of the signs. Most of the signs are represented by an animal or a humanoid creature with the exception of Libra, which is embodied by the scales. Below is a brief description of each of the twelve signs.

The Twelve Signs At A Glance

Aquarius – born between January 21st and February 19th, the Aquarius is symbolized by the water carrier (or water bearer depending on the source). They are known for their bold personality and strong wills, active lifestyles, logical opinions, and are typically great listeners. They’re thought to be divided in two main categories: the shy, quiet ones who prefer to voice their opinions through another’s actions, and the outgoing, flashy center of attention who must speak their mind at every given opportunity. Regardless of their level of outgoing personality or shy nature, they tend to show loyalty to their friends and family to the end.

Pisces – born between February 20th and March 20th, Pisces are shown as two fish. On the positive side, they show great levels of sensitivity towards delicate matters, they’re kind, creative, compassionate, and are sympathetic towards all causes. They find themselves accepted as a friend among all manners of groups and types of people. As a negative to those traits, they can become so emotional and sympathetic of other’s problems that they themselves end up distraught over the situation as if it were their own which can lead to problems in the long run when dealing with overly dramatic people.

Aries – born between March 21st and April 20th, a Ram symbolizes Aries. Adventurous spirit, courageous attitude, confident natured, enthusiastic personality and a quick thinker make up the positive traits most Aries tend to display. Negatively, they can be selfish, impatient, and a bit foolish (as overconfidence may lead to in many cases).

Taurus – born between April 21st and May 21st, the Taurus is embodied by a bull. They are loving, reliable, determined, and protective people and those close to them tend to feel safe and secure in their presence. Taureans typically feel comfortable in their own skin and are happy just being themselves. On the darker side of Taurus, they can be jealous, greedy, possessive individuals who like to keep things to themselves.

Gemini – being born between May 22nd and June 21st means the Gemini, shown as two human twins, is your sign. Since this sign is represented by two entities, it’s natural that you could expect them to have two seperate sets of traits. Geminis are witty, smart, lively, energetic, versatile people who love to go out and have a good time with their friends. On the other hand they tend to be overly stressed (said to share the burden two people’s stress inside one body), superficial, nervous, and inconsistent. Knowing that Geminis can act as almost two different people at times makes it easier to understand the actions of a Gemini.

Cancer – those born between June 22nd and July 22nd are represented by the Crab under the Cancer sign. Cancers are protective, creative, loving and careful people who create loving homes and go to great lengths to protective their loved ones from harm. As with the familiar ocean crab, this sign can show clingy, obsessive, and unpredictable behavior.

Leo – born between July 23rd and August 22nd means you are a Leo, a Lion. Leos make great allies showing all around them kindness, generosity, loyalty, love, and enthusiasm. On the other hand they can be controlling, intolerant, and overly proud. Gain a Leo’s trust and you will have a loyal friend for life, but betray one and you’ll find a ceaseless enemy.

Virgo – anyone born between August 23rd and September 23rd is represented by Virgo, the Virgin. This sign is the only one represented specifically as a female, whereas the other signs (animal or humanoid) are accepted as either male or female. Virgos can be modest, shy, extremely reliable, and highly intelligent people. As with the nature of being represented by a virgin, they tend to over-worry, be fussy, critical, and very conservative people.

Libra – the scales represent anyone born between September 24th and October 23rd which is known as Libra. This is the only sign of the twelve Zodiac signs that isn’t represented by a living creature or human type. On the positive side, they are idealistic, social, relaxed people who are diplomatic, charming, and easy to get along with in social situations. They often end arguments and return peace to the party when unfortunate events occur. When it comes to the negative side, they tend to be flirtatious, indecisive, easily influenced, and gullible people that should take an extra second to think about the outcomes of certain decisions they make throughout the day.

Scorpio – born between October 24th and November 22nd, Scorpio is represented by a scorpion. Considered one of the most emotional signs, they are known for their determination, intiution, passion, and powerful presence. Their wild emotions can often lead them to trouble among other signs, especially in relationships. Their negative traits include jealousy (both liking to make people jealous, or being jealous of others), a resentful nature, compulsive behaviors, and the tendency to keep secrets from those they shouldn’t.

Sagittarius – those who are born between November 23rd and December 21st are known as Sagittarius, represented by the Archer. It’s common to see the Sagittarius as a centaur, a mythological half man, half horse beast that according to legend were deadly with a wooden bow. On the positive side they are optimistic, free-spirited, jolly, honest, and philisophical people who are endlessly entertaining to talk to and love to have a friendly debate or regale others with entertaining stories, finding themselves right at home in a setting like a campfire among friends with good food and drink. On the negative side, they can be careless, irresponsible, restless people who prefer drifting from group to group seeking entertainment rather than settling down with a close group of friends.

Capricorn – born between December 22nd and January 20th, the Capricorn is represented by the goat (or, according to some, the sea goat). This interesting sign shows strong traits such as being practical, ambitious, humorous, reserved, careful, and patient. As for negatives, they tend to be pessimistic, hold grudges for a long time, and tend to bring other’s mood down with them when they feel like it.

While the above description of the twelve signs of the Zodiac obviously can’t encompass all positive and negative traits by everyone, it’s an interesting way to know a bit more about a friend, family member, co worker, or loved one. Knowing their sign and associated traits can be a fun way to get a deeper understanding of how they act or why they do some of the things they do – even if they might not know it!
