Last week we talked about using an ethical will workbook as a step by step guide for writing your spiritual ethical will. This week I’d like to look at another heritage topic, family genealogy. There are several ways that you can explore your genealogy, however, one of the easiest ways is to develop a family tree.

The first way that you can develop a family tree is to simply create a handwritten chart that starts with the latest generation and works its way back to the founding members of the family. To fill in the blanks on your family tree you can use your own memories and familiarity with your family, and you can also interview family members to fill in the pieces of information that you don’t know.

Another way that you can develop a family tree is to use genealogy software programs like Family Tree Maker 16. These programs will ask you questions about your family lineage and then plot people on a graphic of a tree for you. These programs are great because some actually let you upload photographs of the members of your family. This produces a visual and textual depiction of your family tree. A great heirloom that your kids and grandkids can continue to add to long after you have passed away.

Using software programs, like Family Tree Maker 16, to chart your family genealogy tree can be a lot of fun. The family tree that you create can be handed down as a digital file or as an addendum to your spiritual ethical will.

I have been interested in starting my genealogy and these are some great tips. It is kind of overwhelming in the beginning because you’re not sure where to start, but you have given me a great place to begin.
